Shave and a Haircut

bearskinIt’s been a while since I posted, and I’m sure my loyal readers -both of you- are wondering what’s been going on. So, here’s the update; I got a haircut. In most places this would seem dull. However, in Portland this is an event. On the advice of a friend I went to The Modern Man Barber Shop. It’s an old style barber in NE Portland, this throwback to grooming is a trend I’ve recently noticed. Included with my haircut was a drink, I went for a shot of whisky. That’s right they have a full bar upstairs, decorated with bear skins and other rustic accessories. Downstairs the decor was equally traditional -dark woods, manly barbers chairs, and more animal heads- and the barbers where incredibly professional. I mean, they were wearing ties and so well dressed that I felt like a slob, fortunately the drink took the edge off. My hair was cut to appropriate lengths and still looks good. To top it off, the trim ended with hot lather and a straight razor shave on my neck.

I’ve never had a haircut that I’ve been talking about weeks later. Even if the cut was bad I’d still go back. Normally I’d feel bad saying that a haircut was the highlight of my week, but this was an experience. From now on I’ll never get a sober haircut, hopefully the barbers stay dry.
